The Lok Sabha passed the Prevention of Insults to Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, commonly referred to as the Vande Mataram Bill, through a voice vote after a heated debate. During the discussion, DMK MP A. Raja opposed the proposal, while the government defended the amendment, saying it was aimed at protecting national honour and was not directed against any individual or ideology.
The bill seeks to include Vande Mataram alongside existing national symbols covered under the law. Following its passage in the Lok Sabha, the legislation will move to the Rajya Sabha for further consideration.
