Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, strongly criticised the Centre during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. Referring to the NEET UG 2026 paper leak controversy, Kharge argued that increasing penalties alone would not prevent examination fraud without structural reforms.
He highlighted that education spending remains around 3% of GDP, claimed that nearly 10 lakh teaching posts are vacant, and called for a legally binding annual examination calendar, a Supreme Court-monitored independent inquiry into exam irregularities, and immediate recruitment in public sector and teaching positions.
