A visit to a bank turned fatal for a 27-year-old farmer after a security guard’s gun accidentally went off inside a Union Bank branch in Delhi on Tuesday morning. The victim, identified as Manish Kumar, had gone to the bank to update his Aadhaar details when he was struck by a bullet and later died. Police have arrested the security guard, Vinod Kumar (53), a retired Army serviceman, in connection with the incident.
Gun Goes Off Minutes After Bank Opens The incident took place at around 10:30 am when Vinod Kumar was loading cartridges into his 12-bore double-barrel gun inside the bank. According to police, the firearm accidentally discharged, and the bullet struck Manish Kumar in the back. The sudden gunshot triggered panic inside the branch as customers and employees rushed out. Manish was found lying in a pool of blood and was immediately taken to Rao Tula Ram Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. What Police Found During Investigation Police said they received information that a security guard’s gun had gone off inside the bank, injuring a person. By the time officers reached the spot, the victim had already been shifted to the hospital. During questioning, Vinod Kumar told investigators that he had reported late for duty. While he was loading the weapon, the bank had already opened and employees as well as customers had entered the premises.
Police said the gun fired either due to negligence or a technical issue. Security Guard Arrested Vinod Kumar is a resident of a village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. He served in the Indian Army before retiring in 2018 and had been working as a security guard at the Union Bank branch through a private security agency for the past two years. He has two sons, both of whom are college students. Police have arrested him and registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and forensic examination. CCTV Footage, Forensic Reports Under Examination As part of the investigation, police have seized the 12-bore gun used in the incident and sent it for forensic examination. Manish Kumar’s post-mortem has also been conducted, and officials are awaiting both the forensic and post-mortem reports to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.
