Did Delhi narrowly avert a major incident on July 20 during the Cockroach Janata Party’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march from Jantar Mantar? CCTV footage accessed by India Today raises questions over the Delhi Police’s preparedness, as thousands of protesters managed to reach within 100 metres of Parliament. The protesters also succeeded in reaching several points around the Parliament building, with repeated clashes reported between the protesters and police.
Read Full Story India Today reviewed five CCTV recordings from locations around Parliament, including exclusive footage from the selfie point near Rail Bhawan. The footage shows protesters reaching the spot and creating a commotion, while a large contingent of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel remained deployed. The Parliament building can be seen in the background behind the RAF personnel as the situation remained tense.
The CCTV footage raises questions about the security arrangements made by the Delhi Police despite having prior information about the proposed Parliament march. One of the questions is why adequate arrangements were not made to prevent thousands of protesters from reaching Parliament when Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was already in force in New Delhi. The footage also raises questions over why stronger barricading was not put in place to stop the protesters from reaching the Parliament complex.
As the commotion escalated, police detained some protesters. The CCTV footage from the selfie point near Rail Bhawan shows protesters gathered at the location, with police and RAF personnel deployed nearby and the Parliament building visible behind them. Ends
