The Rajya Sabha has passed the Prevention of Insults to Honor Amendment Bill 2026 via a voice vote. The legislation amends the Honor Act of 1971 to extend statutory protection to Vande Mataram, placing the national song at par with the national flag and the national anthem.
Under the proposed law, any deliberate insult, obstruction, or disruption during its rendition is a punishable offense carrying up to three years in jail, a fine, or both. While the ruling party described the passage as a historic correction, opposition parties, including the DMK, AIMIM, and TMC, raised strong objections, leading to a walkout by opposition members.
