The victims were allegedly lured to Thailand with the promise of an inexpensive seven-day holiday package in Pattaya. A Pakistani national based in Dubai is suspected of masterminding the kidnapping of three Indian men in Thailand after Thai police arrested five Indian nationals accused of carrying out the abduction and demanding ransom from the victims’ families. The five suspects- Avtar Singh (38), Jagjit Singh (38), Rambalak Kumar (24), Sukhbir Singh (37) and Kulra Singh (27)- were arrested at a hotel in Bangkok’s Khlong Tan district while allegedly attempting to flee the country, the Bangkok Post reported.
Police said that the accused told investigators that they had been recruited by a Pakistani national whom they had contacted through a chat application around a month ago. The alleged mastermind, believed to be operating from Dubai, reportedly instructed them to kidnap the three Indian men and extort cryptocurrency from their families. Investigators said the suspects were promised the victims’ cash and valuables, along with airline tickets to escape Thailand, in exchange for carrying out the kidnappings. The victims were allegedly lured to Thailand with the promise of an inexpensive seven-day holiday package in Pattaya. Instead, they were taken to a house, held captive for several days and allegedly tortured while their families were pressured to pay ransom. The case came to light after the Indian Embassy in Thailand alerted Chonburi Immigration Police and Pattaya City Police on July 21 following complaints from the victims’ families.
Relatives reportedly shared video call recordings showing the men bound hand and foot while being assaulted. The kidnappers allegedly demanded Rs 40 lakh from each family for their release. Acting on intelligence and CCTV footage, Thai police raided a two-storey townhouse in Pattaya on Monday and rescued the three victims- Mohit (23), Ashish (24) and Himanshu (20). Officers said the men were found tied up and gagged on the upper floor of the property, with visible injuries. Police recovered adhesive tape, a wooden object believed to have been used to assault the victims and red spray paint allegedly used to stage injuries in photographs and videos sent to the families as proof of captivity. During questioning, the rescued men also claimed that another Indian national had previously been held at the same location and was released only after his family allegedly paid around Rs 30 lakh in ransom.
