Two ships, including a US-owned natural gas storage tanker, caught fire after an explosion at Egypt’s Damietta Port on the Mediterranean coast, in an apparent drone attack. Egyptian authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of the blast and investigations are underway. The incident involved the Energos Winter, a floating natural gas storage tanker owned by US-based Energos Infrastructure, and the GasLog Salem, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier operated by Greek shipping company GasLog.
Maritime intelligence firm Ambrey said at least one of the vessels was struck by a drone while another tracking company also assessed the explosion as a likely drone attack. Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum said there were no confirmed injuries or fatalities. Both vessels were moved away from the port after the fire was brought under control. Energos Infrastructure said all crew members aboard the Energos Winter were safe and accounted for, though the company said it had not yet determined whether the ship had been directly hit by a drone. The Damietta Port, located near the Suez Canal, is an important energy and shipping hub.
US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the incident and suggested Iran was responsible. He warned that the United States would respond strongly. The latest incident adds to growing security concerns across key maritime corridors. Since the conflict in West Asia intensified, commercial shipping through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz has declined sharply due to repeated attacks and security threats, forcing many operators to alter routes and reassess risks.
