Wildfires are raging across Spain and France as extreme heat, strong winds and difficult terrain hamper firefighting efforts. In Spain, one blaze has scorched an area almost the size of New York City and remains out of control. Hundreds of people have been forced to flee their homes, with some returning to devastating scenes of destruction.
In France, more than 2,000 firefighters are battling fires as communities rally to help protect homes and neighbourhoods. Both countries are also facing shortages of specialised aircraft used to drop large quantities of water on the flames. Firefighters from across Europe have joined efforts on the ground and in the air.
