Police-Farmer Clash In Bhopal After Protesters Break Through Barricades A clash broke out between farmers and police in Narmadapuram near Bhopal on Wednesday as protesting farmers climbed onto a bus and broke through police barricades while marching towards the Madhya Pradesh capital. The farmers had reached Bhopal overnight to press for their demands, including 100 per cent procurement of the moong crop at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the scrapping of the e-token system for fertilisers. No talks had taken place with the government before the protest escalated. Farmers’ protest The agitation continued on the Bhopal-Narmadapuram highway after police reportedly stopped the farmers from marching towards Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s residence.
More than 2,000 farmers, carrying clothes, bedding and enough food to last a week, breached police barricades and entered the outskirts of Bhopal on Tuesday night. The protesters are demanding 100 per cent procurement of the moong crop at MSP, abolition of the e-token system used to facilitate procurement of farmers’ produce and fertiliser distribution, and timely and reasonable availability of fertilisers. The farmers also overcame several police attempts to stop their march. They first breached barricades at Sethani Ghat, where the march began, and later crossed another police barricade at the Mandideep border between Bhopal and Raisen districts. Talks remain inconclusive After the farmers reached the outskirts of Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh government reportedly held its first round of talks with the protesters. However, the discussions ended without any breakthrough. The state government has formed a ministerial committee to continue discussions with the farmers. Another meeting, to be led by the Mohan Yadav government, is expected to take place at 6 pm on Wednesday.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said, “Farmers’ Welfare Year is being celebrated throughout Madhya Pradesh. A committee has been formed to communicate with them. Yesterday, we sent our Agriculture Minister Aidal Singh Kansana to hold talks with them. Even today, Kansana and ministers Krishna Gaur, Vishwas Sarang and Rakesh Singh along with officials will hold a dialogue with the farmers." Government hopes for a solution The Chief Minister said the government has always stood with farmers with positive suggestions but added that both sides should ensure the public is not inconvenienced. “Therefore, we will find out the solution to the problem through dialogue and we hope that all farmers’ organisations, like Bharatiya Kisan Sangthan and others, will find a way out. When we talk about people’s welfare, obviously it also means betterment of farmers," he said. The development comes as Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders met Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait in New Delhi to discuss the possibility of a joint platform for farmers, students and young people.
