The criticism came after The New York Times published a report on clashes and local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The report said violence had erupted in Mirpur as police confronted members of the Joint Awami Action Committee, a civil rights group protesting alleged police excesses.

Responding to the report, the Indian Embassy in the US took exception to the newspaper's use of the term "Pakistani Kashmir" in its headline. "There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir," the embassy said in a post, rejecting the terminology used by the newspaper.
The embassy reiterated that the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. It also said Pakistan continues to illegally occupy parts of these territories and accused Islamabad of using violence against people living in the occupied areas. The New York Times reported that the violence came amid weeks of unrest that have left dozens dead and overshadowed local elections in the region.
The newspaper also said the Joint Awami Action Committee had alleged that several of its supporters were killed in clashes with police, although those claims could not be independently verified and had not been officially confirmed.
