A bill seeking to impose sanctions on Russia and Iran has cleared its first hurdle in the US Senate with 86 senators voting in favour
A bill seeking to impose sanctions on Russia and Iran has cleared its first hurdle in the US Senate with 86 senators voting in favour. The proposed legislation, known as the Lindsey Graham Act, would empower the US President to levy a 100% tariff on countries purchasing oil and energy from Russia or Iran.
The bill directly impacts major energy importers including India, China, Japan, and several European Union nations. India, which remains a primary buyer of Russian crude energy and maintains strategic diplomatic ties with Moscow, faces trade concerns over the proposed measure. While the bill has advanced its first stage, it must clear additional procedural hurdles in the US House of Representatives before becoming law.
