Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday (July 29, 2026) asked the Centre “to end silence on the killing of civilians by the Pakistani security forces in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir [PoK] and get it stopped”. “If the Government of India considers PoK an integral part of the country, why is it silent?
It must raise its voice over the reported killings and hardships faced by people there. I have not heard any statement from them,” said Dr. Abdullah. The NC chief was referring to the reported killing of over 20 civilians this week in PoK in the firing by security forces on protesters, who have hit the streets over a number of demands in the past two months.
Abdullah also requested the United Nations Human Rights Commission to visit PoK, document and resolve their problems. “I have also appealed to the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to highlight the issue,” he added. Meanwhile, Dr. Abdulah warned the Centre against backtracking on the promises made to youths, who were protesting at Jantar Mantar recently.
“Youths are met with First Information Reports, arrests and harassment. This movement will continue. The students have risen and, God willing, they will carry it forward,” said the NC chief.
