Heavy rainfall had been pounding the region when water levels suddenly began to rise.
Like countless families across flood-hit Assam, the Duwaras found themselves facing a terrifying choice: stay and risk being trapped, or leave and search for safety. Inside their home was 55-year-old Rohini Duwara, his wife Tutumoni, their daughter Bidisha and their two sons, Bidyut and Biplab. As floodwaters surged into the house, the family decided to move. It would be the last journey they would make together. Witnesses and relatives say the family was attempting to cross a flooded stretch when the current overwhelmed them. Tutumoni and her daughter Bidisha were swept away first. Their cries for help echoed through the darkness. Hearing them, the two sons rushed into the water. Neither hesitated. Bidyut and Biplab plunged into the flood in a desperate attempt to save their mother and sister. But the current was too strong. Within moments, they too disappeared beneath the rushing water.
