Officials of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve in Chikkamagaluru district organised a series of awareness programmes on Wednesday to mark World Tiger Day. In keeping with the 2026 theme, “Securing the Future of Tigers with Indigenous People and Local Communities at Heart,” the Forest Department conducted activities aimed at creating awareness among schoolchildren living in villages on the fringes of the reserve.
The staff of the Muthodi Wildlife Range organised drawing and essay competitions for students of primary schools at Jagara, Kalavase and Kolagame villages. Prizes were distributed to the winners. The children were also taken on a complimentary jungle safari, during which they were introduced to the region’s wildlife and forest ecosystem. Similar programmes were organised by the staff of the Tanigebailu, Lakkavalli and Hebbe ranges.
Students of Chowdeshwari High School, Tanigebailu; Government High School at Lakkavalli, Poornaprajna High School, Sangameshwarapete; and Nirmala High School, Balehonnur participated enthusiastically in the events, Pulkit Meena, Deputy Conservator of Forests and Field Director of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, said in a press release. Meena said tigers were not merely wild animals but a key species that helped maintain ecological balance.
“To mark World Tiger Day, we involved schoolchildren in awareness activities in line with this year’s theme, highlighting the importance of conserving tigers and their habitats with the support of indigenous people and local communities,” he said.
