Healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson has agreed to a 5.5 billion dollar settlement to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits in the United States alleging its talcum-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer. The legal battle escalated in 2019 after the US Food and Drug Administration found asbestos, a known carcinogen, in product samples. Following the revelation, Indian regulators, including the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, conducted testing across nine Indian cities and detected no asbestos contamination in local J&J samples.
In 2023, Johnson & Johnson completed a global transition, replacing talc with cornstarch in all baby powder products worldwide, including India. While the US legal settlement carries no direct legal impact on Indian consumers, the current J&J products sold in India use the updated cornstarch formulation. However, several other domestic brands in India continue to manufacture baby powders using talc, raising ongoing questions about product safety standards.
