That’s what Bihar’s State Transgender Welfare Board wants to build. In a move that has already grabbed attention, the board unanimously approved a proposal to dedicate a temple to the Prime Minister, saying he transformed the lives of the transgender community by giving them “respect and rights." The proposal was moved by board member Ranjan Singh during the board’s maiden meeting, held under the Social Welfare Department of the Bihar government.
“Since the transgender community in Bihar does not have a temple of its own, I proposed to build a temple for Narendra Modi because he gave us respect and rights. The proposal received the support of all members and was approved by the board," Singh said as quoted by news agency PTI. According to Singh, the meeting was the first of the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board since the implementation of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which provides institutional representation to the transgender community in the state. “Today’s meeting marked the first gathering of the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board following the enactment of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which provided the transgender community with institutional representation in the state secretariat," he said.
While the board has approved the proposal, details regarding the location, funding, timeline and construction of the proposed temple have not yet been announced. The proposal is expected to be taken up for further administrative consideration in the coming months. This is not the first time that a temple has been prorposed for the serving Prime Minister. Earlier in 2015, PM Modi’s followers built a temple for him in Kothariya village on the outskirts of Gujarat’s Rajkot. The Prime Minister publicly disapproved of the move, saying temples should be dedicated to gods and not politicians, after which the idol was reportedly removed.
