Karnataka has decided to file an appeal before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) against the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) order issued on Tuesday (July 28, 2026) to release water at a rate of 3,500 cusecs a day for 15 days to Tamil Nadu. Disclosing this to media persons in New Delhi on Wednesday (July 29, 2026), Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said preparations to file the appeal were going on. Already consultations had been held with the Advocate General of the State and legal experts as well as officials concerned, he noted.
He said the decision had been taken in the wake of deficit rainfall in Karnataka. ”The rain god has not been kind to us, this time. Earlier, the CWRC had rejected Tamil Nadu’s request for the release of Cauvery water on two occasions. However, this time it has directed Karnataka to release water. We have discussed the legal options with Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy and the officials concerned,” he said. The Chief Minister, who is presently camping in Delhi to hold consultations with the party high command on Cabinet expansion, said he would hold consultations with the Opposition leaders after his return to Bengaluru.
Tamil Nadu CM to visit Karnataka Shivakumar said his Tamil Nadu counterpart Joseph Vijay had expressed desire to meet him. “Mr. Vijay has written to the Karnataka Chief Secretary and has also spoken to me over phone. I have extended him the respect he deserves and invited him to the meeting (in Bengaluru). It is our duty to receive guests visiting our State with due courtesy, and all necessary arrangements have been made to receive him,” he said. He said, “We have requested Mr. Vijay to personally assess the situation in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka that is reeling under drought.
I have also informed him that the government will make the necessary arrangements for his areal visit. He should witness the ground realities himself. Let us see what decision he takes.”
