IT and software development jobs are becoming scarcer as more and more companies move to restructure around AI use. A new study by popular jobs listing website Indeed gives a data-supported inside look at Indias’s job market revealing stats that may come as surprise to many. While IT and software-related roles are falling, there is growing demand for therapists in India. More specifically, openings for IT and tech-related jobs saw an 18 per cent decline in the last three months. Fields like therapy and food preparation services saw the same 18 per cent growth, during the same period, according to data shared by Indeed.

The worst-performing fields are tech-based such as software development which saw an 18 per cent decline, IT Infrastructure, Operations & Support fell 18 per cent, Data & Analytics 16 per cent and IT Systems & Solutions 15 per cent. Job postings for therapy and food preparation have grown by 18 per cent, while demand for sports and medical technicians has increased by 15 per cent.

Commenting on the outlook for the Indian job market, Callam Pickering, APAC at Indeed, says, “The Indian economy is likely to face headwinds this year as the conflict in the Middle East pushes up inflation and makes households and businesses more cautious.
As one of the world's fastest-growing economies, however, India is relatively well placed to absorb that impact” The slowdown in tech hiring is also coming at a time when layoffs have become more common across the global technology industry. Over the past year, several major companies have announced workforce reductions. Amazon reportedly cut around 30,000 corporate and tech roles between October 2025 and January 2026. In April this year, Meta announced 8,000 layoffs, while Microsoft also rolled out a voluntary retirement programme for about 8,750 employees in the US. Ends
