The government on Wednesday rejected Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi's allegation that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was responsible for the alleged shooting of students during the recent protests, with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh asserting that no bullets were fired and no order to open fire was ever issued. Addressing the Lok Sabha, Dr Jitendra Singh said the claim was "factually incorrect" and clarified that only tear gas was used during the police action. He further stated that an order to open fire can only be issued by a magistrate and not by the police. He said Priyanka Gandhi had claimed that examination papers had leaked 152 times and questioned the basis of the figure. "Priyanka Gandhi said there were 152 paper leaks. Where did this figure come from? There is no proof or authentication for it," he said. The minister further referred to another claim made by Priyanka Gandhi that 750 crore children had been affected by the alleged 152 paper leaks. "I verified this from the written script she placed before Parliament," Dr Singh said. He questioned the accuracy of the number, stating that the world's total population is around 8 billion and that the claim of 750 crore children being affected was beyond comprehension. "I do not know where this figure came from. Either it is fabricated, or there is mischief in it, or it reflects ignorance," he said. Dr Singh also rejected Priyanka Gandhi's assertion that no action had been taken after the anti-paper leak law came into force in 2024.
He said she had perhaps not studied the implementation of the law, adding that 52 FIRs had already been registered under its provisions over the past two years. According to the minister, 29 of these cases were registered under the Prevention of Unfair Means Act, while 23 cases were registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He said Rahul Gandhi had gone to sit outside the Prime Minister's residence at 7 am, suggesting that the Congress leader had long harboured an ambition of becoming Prime Minister and residing at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. "When that aspiration was not fulfilled, frustration led him to sit outside the Prime Minister's residence," Dr Singh said. He added that Rahul Gandhi was politely advised that such conduct did not suit the Leader of the Opposition but insisted that he be removed, following which the police were requested to shift him from the spot.
