(AFP) Russia unleashed a devastating barrage of missile and drone strikes that killed 13 people and wounded dozens across Ukraine as the conflict escalated sharply, just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow was preparing a “massive new strike". Russia launched aerial attacks on major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv, on Sunday that wounded more than 70 people. Nine people were killed in a Russian missile and drone attack on the southeastern city of Dnipro, while four people were killed and 58 injured in the capital city, according to authorities. A large plume of smoke was seen at Kyiv’s city centre, with the chief of the City Military Administration warning people that the “enemy was striking with ballistic missiles." Ten people, including a child, were wounded in the city of Kharkiv. Zelenskyy’s Warning Russia has bombarded Ukraine almost daily since launching an offensive in 2022, often provoking retaliation from Kyiv. The latest strike came after Zelenskyy on Friday warned that Moscow was preparing a massive strike. “We have intel indicating that Russia is preparing a new massive attack. Please pay attention to air raid alerts and stay safe. Air defence and the continued need to help Ukraine protect its skies are our key priorities.

The Ukrainian president has reiterated his call to allies to allow and finance the supply of Patriot missiles, which can intercept Russian ballistic missiles. Last week, he wrote to US President Donald Trump and the US Congress asking for the Patriot systems. Meanwhile, Ukraine has also stepped up its strikes on occupied territories and on Russia in retaliation for the daily Russian bombardments. A Ukrainian drone strike killed one person in Russia’s Kursk region, near the Ukrainian border, while another drone sparked a fire at an oil refinery. Last week, Russia indicated that it intended “systematic strikes" on targets in Kyiv linked to the Ukrainian military as well as decision-making centres, and urged foreigners to leave. It said the action was in response to a drone strike last month on a dormitory in Ukraine’s Russian-held region of Luhansk, which killed 21 people.
