(Image: Reuters) Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese Xi Jinping held bilateral talks during which they highlighted the danger of a return of the “law of the jungle". In a joint statement, Reuters reported, the two leaders said there have been attempts by some countries to dominate global affairs in the spirit of the colonial era had failed but that the world was in danger of a return to the “law of the jungle".
“The global situation is becoming more complex. The global peace and development agenda is facing new risks and challenges, and there is a danger of fragmentation of the international community and a return to the ‘law of the jungle’," they said in a declaration released by the Kremlin in Russian. It further said: “Attempts by a number of states to unilaterally manage global affairs, impose their interests on the entire world, and limit the sovereign development of other countries, in the spirit of the colonial era, have failed." Though they did not name those states in the statement, China and Russia in the past have criticised US-led attempt to enforce global hegemony.
During the talks, Xi said both nations should support each other’s development and work towards a fairer global governance system, Al Jazeera reported. Putin said Russia-China relations were helping global stability and stressed that Moscow remained a reliable energy supplier amid the ongoing West Asia crisis. The visit comes shortly after US President Donald Trump visited the Chinese capital, placing additional global attention on the meeting between the Chinese and Russian leaders. The optics and outcomes of the summit are expected to be closely watched and compared with Trump’s recent Beijing visit.
