According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at the Darulshafa MLA residential complex in Lucknow. Bhurji reportedly fell from the seventh floor of the building and sustained critical injuries. Security personnel and bystanders rushed to his aid before he was taken to Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The sudden fall triggered panic within the residential complex, prompting senior police officers and forensic experts to reach the spot. The area was cordoned off as investigators began collecting evidence, examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to reconstruct Bhurji’s movements in the minutes leading up to the fall. Police are also trying to ascertain why the former minister was on the seventh floor of the building and whether he was alone or had met someone before the incident.
While speculation has surfaced over whether the fall was accidental or a case of suicide, investigators have maintained that all possibilities remain open pending the post-mortem report and forensic analysis. Police have ruled out nothing. CCTV footage is being scanned, forensic evidence is being collected and those who met Bhurji in the hours before his death are being questioned. Investigators are also trying to establish why the veteran politician was on the seventh floor of the building, especially when reports suggest he was not allotted accommodation there. “The body has been sent for post-mortem. We are investigating all aspects of the incident. CCTV footage and other evidence are being examined. The exact cause of the fall will be known only after the investigation is completed," a senior Lucknow Police official said, urging people not to jump to conclusions until the probe is complete. A Dalit leader with a cross-party political journey, Bhurji remained relevant in Uttar Pradesh politics for more than two decades. He began his political career with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and emerged as a prominent grassroots leader from western Uttar Pradesh. He served as a Minister of State in the BSP government led by Mayawati and was elected as an MLA from Naraini in Banda district. Known for championing the cause of marginalised communities, he cultivated a strong support base among Dalits and later expanded his outreach to Other Backward Classes. After joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bhurji was entrusted with key organisational responsibilities and was serving as the State Minister of the BJP OBC Morcha at the time of his death.
