Parliament Monsoon Session 2026: The Rajya Sabha erupted into chaos on Wednesday after Leader of the House and Union minister JP Nadda responded to Delhi Police’s action during last week’s students’ protest march to Parliament, saying that it was a “normal law and order situation" and accused the opposition of “politicising and sensationalising" the issue. The row erupted after Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of alleged “police atrocities" on protesting students and demanded action against the officials responsible for the crackdown.

“Those who attacked the students are roaming free. There should be action against them," Kharge said, as opposition members created a ruckus in the House. He was joined by other opposition leaders, who demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought action against the police officials who ordered the crackdown. He said the police had acted in accordance with law to maintain public order. “It was a very normal law and order situation that we have to understand. Police acted to maintain the order," Nadda said in the Rajya Sabha, adding that “any student who is into activism will have to face such a situation." Drawing on his own experience, the Union Minister recalled being arrested during his student activism days during the Emergency imposed by the Congress government. “I have been arrested during student activism during the Emergency. Any student activist faces this. This is a very normal situation," he said. Accusing the opposition of exaggerating the incident, Nadda said, “They are sensationalising this."
