Police and the district administration in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur have ordered all meat, fish, egg and other non-vegetarian food shops to remain closed from July 26 until further orders, citing the need to ensure the Kanwar Yatra passes off peacefully. Authorities have warned of legal action against violators. Hapur Police are maintaining continuous surveillance in the area, while food establishments and other businesses are also being inspected. Meanwhile, meat shop owners and restaurant operators in Delhi have been told that the sale of meat, fish and other non-vegetarian food has been prohibited along the Kanwar Yatra route and in nearby areas under administrative orders to ensure the pilgrimage is held in a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.
They have also been directed to keep their shops and hotels completely closed from July 26 until further orders. The administration has warned that if any establishment is found open or the order is violated, strict legal action will be taken against the owner in accordance with the law. As the annual Kanwar Yatra is set to begin later this week, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also issued directions to its 12 zones to shut all unauthorised meat shops and act against licensed outlets found violating permit conditions along yatra routes and near Kanwar camps. Officials said the civic body has asked its zones to complete all civic arrangements before the yatra, during which 308 Kanwar camps are scheduled to operate across the national capital from July 30 to August 11.
In an office memorandum issued on Monday, all zonal deputy commissioners were ordered to ensure that encroachments at identified Kanwar camp sites are removed before the start of the pilgrimage. The memorandum said the MCD had been given the responsibility of clearing encroachments from camp sites well in advance of the yatra. Zonal authorities have already been given details of the identified locations, while additional camps may also be permitted if required. The civic body has further directed officials to ensure that no unauthorised or unlicensed meat shop operates along the yatra routes or around Kanwar camps. It said action should also be taken against licensed meat shops found violating the terms and conditions of their licences. Along with the enforcement measures, the MCD has asked all zones to carry out intensive sanitation drives at camp sites and surrounding areas.
