A massive rockfall occurred on the road near the Headworks Dam in the Munnar hill station in Kerala on Wednesday (July 29, 2026) morning, temporarily disrupting traffic on a stretch of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway. According to officials, the incident took place early in the morning.
Since there were no vehicles on the route at the time, a major tragedy was averted. Road-widening work was going on along the highway when the rockfall occurred. Local residents noted that several large rocks along the roadside continue to pose a threat of rockfalls.
Authorities have launched operations to remove the boulder and debris from the road. The Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway is one of the primary routes connecting travellers to the popular hill station. This incident comes
shortly after a major mudslide struck the same highway near the Old Munnar CSI Church, where a large crack developed on the road, leading to a traffic suspension that lasted nearly a week.
