(PTI file photo) The encounter of the main suspect involved in the murder of a 17-year-old Class 11 student has kicked off a political storm in Uttar Pradesh, with opposition leaders questioning whether police action without a proper trial was justified. This came after Surya Chauhan, a student at a private school, was stabbed to death in Khoda Colony on Thursday after being asked about goat sacrifice. The accused, identified as Asad, was killed in a police encounter on Sunday after allegedly opening fire on the cops near Vasundhara. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath referred to the incident during a speech in Bijnor on Monday, saying such acts of violence would not be tolerated in the state. “Kaisi dosti? The benefits of government schemes have reached every section of society without any caste, language, religion or political preferences," he continued. Congress Alleges ‘Jungle Raj’ Meanwhile, UP Congress president Ajay Rai said the state had transformed into ‘jungle raj’, where anyone could be killed. “This is a state of killings. And yet they claim the law and order is very good. It clearly shows that jungle raj is prevailing. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is unable to handle the situation and should resign and return to the Gorakhpur math," he told IANS. He also claimed that there was a focus on fake encounters instead of providing real justice. Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President Abu Asim Azmi also hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government, saying the encounter violated constitutional provisions and alleging a communal bias “If a Muslim is killed by someone, an encounter does not take place quickly… Yet, if a Hindu is killed, whether by a Muslim or a Yadav, an encounter is carried out with great haste.
This is not an acceptable approach. You must not drag religion into this matter," he said. What Is The Incident? Surya Chauhan was reportedly attacked near Sharma Dairy on Thursday and died of his injuries during treatment. The case drew widespread attention after one of Surya’s friends shared details of the events leading up to the stabbing. According to Surya’s friend Vicky, he, Surya and another friend, Ayush, had gone to the accused’s locality after being invited by a local youth in connection with Bakrid celebrations. An argument broke out between Surya and Asad, after which the latter asked, “Tumne kabhi bakra halal hote dekha hai?" When Surya replied in the negative, Asad attacked him with a knife, resulting in fatal injuries. His mother also alleged that her son was asked about goat sacrifice before being killed. Asad, who carried a reward of Rs 50,000, was killed in a police encounter at around 3:30 am on Sunday when officers received information that he was trying to flee the area. He reportedly opened fire on the police team, prompting the cops to retaliate. Asad sustained bullet injuries, while his accomplice managed to flee.
