(Photo: PTI) The death toll due to the flood situation in Assam increased on Wednesday after seven more people lost their lives in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 75. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 3.32 lakh people across seven districts remain affected by the deluge. The state government has also announced a major relief package by increasing the ex gratia for the families of those killed in the floods to Rs 9 lakh, while easing the documentation required to claim the compensation. Officials said the seven latest deaths were reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district. No person has been reported missing in the current spell of floods, ASDMA said.

The number of people affected declined from 4.45 lakh to 3.32 lakh, while thousands continue to face inundation across Upper Assam. Seven Assam Districts Remain Flood-Hit Floodwaters continue to affect Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup Metropolitan. The floods have impacted 21 revenue circles and 622 villages. Among the worst-hit districts are Charaideo, where 1.42 lakh people are affected, Sivasagar, where 97,074 people remain affected, and Jorhat, where 57,371 people are affected. Government Announces Rs 9 Lakh Ex Gratia Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the compensation for families of flood victims has been enhanced. Under the revised arrangement, the existing ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh will continue. An additional Rs 5 lakh will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, and the total assistance will now be Rs 9 lakh per deceased person. The Chief Minister also announced a relaxation in the compensation process. Families will no longer be required to submit a post-mortem report. Instead, a certificate issued by the concerned Circle Officer will be sufficient for processing the ex gratia. In cases where flood victims remain missing, and their bodies are not recovered within a month, their families will also be eligible for the Rs 9 lakh compensation, based on certification by the Circle Officer.

Rs 15,000 Interim Relief For Worst-Hit Families The Assam government has also announced Rs 15,000 as interim financial assistance for severely affected families in the four worst-hit districts, which include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. The amount is intended to help families meet immediate household expenses. Over 32,000 People Living In Relief Camps Relief and rescue operations continued across the affected districts with multiple agencies remaining deployed. According to officials, 81 relief camps are sheltering 32,477 displaced people, and another 34 relief distribution centres are operational. The Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, medical teams and local volunteers are engaged in rescue and relief work. Essential supplies, including food grains, drinking water, medicines, tarpaulins, baby food and other relief materials, were being distributed among affected families. More Than 45,000 Hectares Of Crops Still Under Water Floodwaters continue to affect agriculture in the state. ASDMA said nearly 45,341.98 hectares of crop area remain submerged. Damage has also been reported to houses, schools, anganwadi centres and cattle sheds across the flood-affected districts. Officials said the Dhansiri (South) River at Numaligarh was flowing above the danger level, though no river was reported to be flowing above its highest flood level.
