Debnath — an MLA from the Panihati constituency — said “everyone must get the consequences of their action" as she hailed the “people of Sonarpur" for the attack that targeted Banerjee.
Speaking to journalists, the newly elected MLA seemed to take a cheeky jibe at the TMC leader, saying: “I would like to thank the people of Sonarpur for taking the initiative to take care of Abhishek Banerjee’s skin and hair and make them silky [by throwing eggs]", as quoted by India Today. Debnath said the defeat suffered by the TMC in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly Election placed a curb on the poll-related violence in the state. “If Trinamool Congress had won this time, would they have allowed us to remain as Bengalis? There would have been no end to the bloodshed," she said. Expressing grief over the rape and murder of her daughter — a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024 — the BJP MLA said: “They both, aunt and nephew, have snatched everything from me.
I don’t know how much peace my daughter’s soul will find. Because none of my daughter’s dreams have come true". Chants Of ‘Chor, Chor’ Follows An Attack Abhishek Banerjee, a key leader and strategist of the Trinamool Congress, came under attack during his visit to Sonarpur in Kolkata. Amid the chants of “Chor, Chor", scores of people pelted stones and eggs at the TMC leader as he attempted to escape the mob wearing a cricket helmet. While the TMC accused the BJP of “orchestrating" the attack, people claimed it was the result of public anger towards the Mamata Banerjee-led party. After a 15-year rule, the TMC was dethroned from West Bengal following the BJP’s landslide victory in the state.
