The case, which was initially projected as a missing person matter, was cracked after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) uncovered alleged inconsistencies in the statements of the accused during the probe. The incident took place in Adoni town, where the victim, identified as Veerendra, lived with his family in G Hosalli village under Adoni mandal. According to the police, Veerendra had frequently confronted his mother, Gangamma, over her alleged relationship with a man identified as Dargappa.
Investigators said the teenager had also spoken about the matter before relatives and villagers, leading to repeated arguments at home. Police suspect the accused viewed the boy as an obstacle to their relationship and allegedly decided to eliminate him before the matter became more widely known in the village. According to the report, Veerendra was allegedly killed, and his body was secretly buried in a graveyard located on the outskirts of the village in an attempt to conceal the crime. The matter reportedly remained hidden for several weeks. Investigators said Gangamma later filed a missing person complaint to divert suspicion. She also reportedly joined local search efforts and later approached the High Court, claiming there had been delays in tracing her son and seeking directions for an expedited investigation. Following the court’s intervention, a Special Investigation Team was formed to intensify the search and examine the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s disappearance.
During the course of the investigation, police reportedly noticed contradictions in the statements given by Gangamma and Dargappa. Officials said technical surveillance, call detail records and witness statements from residents further strengthened suspicion against the duo. “The accused tried to project the case as a missing person complaint. During the investigation, several facts did not match their statements. Scientific evidence and witness accounts helped us uncover the truth," a police officer associated with the investigation was quoted as saying. After sustained questioning, investigators allegedly identified the location where the body had been buried. Veerendra’s remains were exhumed from the village graveyard on June 1 in the presence of revenue officials and medical personnel amid heavy security arrangements. Police later shifted the remains for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and collect forensic evidence connected to the case. The report mentioned that Dargappa has been taken into custody, while the investigation is continuing to establish the sequence of events and gather additional evidence regarding the alleged murder and subsequent cover-up.
