(AFP) The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has warned that it will revive its nationwide agitation if police action against student protesters continues, alleging that the Centre’s assurances during talks that ended the Jantar Mantar protest have not been fully implemented. At a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, CJP leaders said they had received reports of students being summoned, detained or facing legal proceedings in several states despite the understanding reached with the Centre after weeks of protests over the NEET paper leak and exam reforms. The group reiterated that withdrawal of FIRs and protection from punitive action formed a key part of the agreement that led to the suspension of its protest. The Supreme Court cannot be politicised for government’s gains. Its orders cannot be weaponised to achieve those gains. A solemn guarantee was given before the nation. Those ought to be honoured. All FIRs ought to be withdrawn. If criminals roamed, police must apply for…— Saurav Das (@SauravDassss) July 28, 2026 In a statement, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said: “We once again call upon it [the government] to fulfil every commitment it made: withdraw the FIRs, ensure that no protester is subjected to future punitive action, and honour both the letter and the spirit of the assurance that brought an end to the protest.
Failing this, and as previously declared, the Cockroach Janata Party will have no option but to resume its nationwide protest to protect the students and young protesters who stood up not for themselves alone, but for the future of this nation." If the guarantees are dishonoured, the streets of India will once again become the voice of its young," the statement added. However, the situation appears to differ across states. The Maharashtra and West Bengal governments have indicated that they will not initiate fresh coercive action against protesters. In Maharashtra, police have clarified that no fresh notices have been issued after July 26 and that all notices sent to accused in CJP-related cases were issued before the understanding between the Centre and the protesters. In Bengal, 16 people arrested for their alleged involvement in violence during a rally organised by Left students with support from CJP in Kolkata were granted bail on Tuesday, hardly within one hour after they were remanded to judicial custody till July 30. However, the state government announced that the “protection shall not extend to persons having criminal antecedents, as mandated in the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court".
