Tensions between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over Cauvery water sharing have escalated following directives from the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) instructing Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu over the next 15 days. The order triggered widespread protests in Mandya by pro-Kannada organisations opposing the release. Karnataka faces drought conditions and severe water stress, leaving reservoir storage at around 4,000 million cubic feet, which the state prioritises for domestic drinking and irrigation needs.
Karnataka intends to appeal the directive before the Cauvery Water Management Authority while maintaining that the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project remains its legal right. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has demanded immediate compliance with the order, citing severe threats to its Kuruvai paddy crops due to supply shortfalls. The Centre reiterated support for the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi advising Karnataka to submit a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) and engage in bilateral discussions with Tamil Nadu to resolve the issue.
