A same-sex live-in relationship ended in a gruesome murder in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi after a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death by his partner following a quarrel at their rented home, police said on Tuesday. The deceased, Deepanshu Rai, 26, a native of West Bengal, was stabbed to death by Kush Pandey, a resident of Sonarpura in Varanasi, on Monday night. Police have arrested the accused and sent Rai's body for a post-mortem examination. Read Full Story According to police, the two had been living together in a rented room for nearly a year.
ACP Bhelupur Gaurav Kumar said a dispute broke out between the couple after they returned home on Monday night, during which Pandey stabbed Rai in the abdomen with a kitchen knife used for cutting vegetables. Police said Pandey called the 112 emergency helpline after the attack, following which police reached the spot and found Rai lying in a pool of blood. He had succumbed to his injuries before help arrived. The police said that Pandey confessed to the crime during interrogation and told police that he and Rai had been in a relationship for a long time.
Rai claimed they had even married in a temple and had been living together "like husband and wife". Investigators also found that the couple frequently consumed alcohol, and their drinking sessions often ended in heated arguments that sometimes turned violent. According to the preliminary investigation, Rai sustained five stab wounds below the chest. Police alleged that Pandey attacked him repeatedly with a kitchen knife used for cutting vegetables during the altercation. Police added that neighbours had previously witnessed frequent quarrels between the couple, allegedly fuelled by alcohol consumption.
The exact motive behind the fatal attack is being investigated. ACP Gaurav Kumar said Pandey was arrested immediately after the incident and further legal proceedings are underway. Ends Inputs by Roushan Jaiswal
