According to the US Central Command (Centcom), the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired several ballistic missiles in what it described as an “attempted surprise attack" on American forces stationed in the region.
“At 5.45pm ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East," Centcom said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The US military said all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted and no casualties or damage were reported. “US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness," the statement added. Tensions have also intensified in the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of the world’s oil supply typically passes. Iran has attacked several vessels in the strategic waterway, escalating a dispute over shipping routes despite an interim ceasefire agreement reached in June. Tehran has insisted that commercial vessels use a route closer to its coastline and has sought to impose transit fees, while many ships have instead shifted to a US-protected route along Oman’s coast. The renewed violence unfolded as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met President Donald Trump at the White House. Netanyahu described the meeting as “excellent," while the White House called the nearly 90-minute closed-door talks “positive and productive."
