(Image: @MKAchakzaiPKMAP/X) Pakistan’s Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, has launched a direct attack against the country’s military establishment, accusing security forces of destroying peace in border villages across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Achakzai condemned what he characterised as state- despotism, questioning the strategic objective behind military operations that inflict severe hardship on Pashtun and Baloch populations.
The Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chairman accused the state apparatus and military leadership of stoking civil war dynamics by arming private militias and private armed bands. Warning that pitting citizens against one another would ruin the nation’s socio-political fabric, Achakzai questioned the wisdom of distributing weapons to irregular groups, asserting that such tactics threaten the long-term stability of both Balochistan and the broader region. Addressing economic tensions in resource-rich border areas, Achakzai warned the ruling establishment against the unilateral exploitation of gold and mineral deposits in tribal regions. Asserting that land rights belong exclusively to local communities, he proposed a collaborative revenue-sharing model where thirty-five per cent of mineral wealth is reserved for local regional development, thirty-five per cent allocated to foreign extraction firms, and a portion dedicated to local welfare initiatives following transparent dialogue with tribal elders.
Turning to political grievances, Achakzai highlighted that August 5 marks three years of incarceration for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, pointing to systemic electoral rigging and anti-democratic manoeuvres that brought the current administration to power. He called on workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aaeen-e-Pakistan alliance to initiate nationwide peaceful demonstrations on August 5 at the tehsil and district levels, framing the joint struggle as a necessary push to restore the rule of law, constitutional supremacy, and fundamental human rights.
