More than three decades after a violent attack occurred in Bihar's Vaishali district, a local court has found the 84-year-old sole surviving accused guilty. The verdict has drawn widespread attention, particularly because the convicted man is now elderly and physically frail. Read Full Story The case dates back to May 10, 1992, when a complaint was lodged by Adalat Rai, a resident of Judhavanpur village. According to the complaint, five members of the same family, allegedly armed with weapons, arrived at Rai's home and launched an attack following a dispute. He accused the group of opening fire and carrying out a deadly assault on him and his wife.
Police registered a case and subsequently investigated the allegations. A chargesheet was filed in 1993. However, what followed was a legal battle stretching across more than three decades. During the prolonged trial, four of the five accused died. The only surviving accused was Deep Rai, who continued to face trial. After hearing the case, Additional District and Sessions Judge Manoj Kumar Tiwari found Deep Rai guilty under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with a deadly weapon), and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 134 of the Arms Act.
While the conviction has now been recorded, the quantum of punishment is yet to be decided. The court is scheduled to pronounce the sentence on Wednesday. Ends
