Rapid Read Harjinder Kaur wins silver (Picture credit: X) India’s Harjinder Kaur delivered a brilliant performance to claim the women’s 69kg weightlifting silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, setting new Games Records in both the snatch and clean and jerk categories in Glasgow on Tuesday. Harjinder, who won bronze in the 71kg category at the 2022 Birmingham CWG, produced a career-best performance in the 69kg class to bag India’s seventh weightlifting medal at Glasgow 2026.
Harjinder rewrote the Games record in the snatch twice, first clearing 99kg before improving it to 101kg with a confident final attempt. Harjinder then continued her record-breaking spree in the clean and jerk, lifting 123kg before raising the bar to 126kg, taking her overall total to 227kg. Despite Harjinder’s brilliant effort, she was up against a phenomenal display from Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau, who was in a league of her own. The Canadian rewrote the Games records across all categories, lifting 108kg in the snatch and 132kg in the clean and jerk for a record-breaking total of 240kg. Her overall tally, a new CWG record as well, saw her finish 13kg ahead of Harjinder.
Harjinder’s silver added to India’s brilliant run in weightlifting, with the contingent continuing to establish itself as one of the strongest teams at the Games. Harjinder’s composure under pressure and her ability to raise the bar reflected the strides she has made since Birmingham. But Simoneau’s exceptional numbers proved too formidable for Harjinder to challenge for the gold. Indian weightlifters have enjoyed a successful campaign, winning seven medals till now: one gold, five silver and one bronze, highlighting the nation’s growing strength and consistency on the Commonwealth stage.
