Twelve people fell ill in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district after allegedly consuming curry suspected to have been contaminated with pesticide at a feast organised after death rituals in a village, police said on Tuesday. The problem came to light when some of those eating the curry complained that it tasted unusual and bitter. Some of them then felt nauseous and dizzy, after which the family stopped serving the food and the affected people were taken for treatment.
Read Full Story The incident took place in Rahtaura village under the Pali police station area. Officials said that during an inspection of the large utensil in which the curry had been prepared, the family allegedly found an open container of "sulphas" pesticide at the bottom of the vessel, raising suspicion that the food may have been contaminated. The feast had been organised after the "purification" rituals following the death of Sandeep, the brother of Rahtaura resident Netrapal.
Relatives and other guests had gathered for the programme when the incident took place. Family members said they did not know how the pesticide container reached the curry vessel during or after the preparation of the food. Police identified the affected people as Mohit, Shailendra, Netrapal, Anjani, Shripal, Ashish, Ravi, Bhure, Sachin, Kamlesh, Anand and Ankesh. They were rushed to the Pali Primary Health Centre, where they are undergoing treatment. Pali Station House Officer Vijay Kumar Mishra said the matter was being investigated.
"The incident has come to our notice. A detailed investigation is being carried out. Further legal action will be taken after receiving a complaint from the affected family," he said. Police said they were probing whether the pesticide fell into the curry by accident or whether there was any conspiracy behind the incident, as officials continued their investigation into how 12 people fell ill at the feast.
