'Fix Accountability': Panjab University PhD Scholar Dies After Electrocution In Waterlogged Campus Published By, Last Updated: July 28, 2026, 21:37 IST Students have called for the Vice Chancellor's resignation, claiming that repeated concerns regarding campus infrastructure and safety had gone unaddressed. News18 A 28-year-old PhD scholar at Panjab University died after allegedly being electrocuted on the waterlogged campus following heavy rainfall on Tuesday, triggering protests by students who accused the university administration of negligence and demanded the resignation of the Vice Chancellor. The deceased, identified as Jyoti Yadav, was a research scholar in the Department of Microbiology. Jyoti was walking from Girls’ Hostel No. 8 towards Hostel No. 10 when the incident occurred. Due to severe waterlogging on the campus, she reportedly took an unpaved route to avoid the accumulated rainwater. However, within moments, she allegedly came in contact with an electric current, suspected to have emanated from an electric junction box in the area, Tribune reported. Eyewitnesses said Jyoti collapsed after receiving the electric shock. She was rushed to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead. Death Sparks Major Protest The incident sparked outrage among students, who gathered outside the Vice Chancellor’s office and staged a protest, alleging administrative negligence and demanding accountability.
Protesters also called for the Vice Chancellor’s resignation, claiming that repeated concerns regarding campus infrastructure and safety had gone unaddressed. Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) leader Gauravveer Sohal said, “They are busy haggling and bargaining over a child’s life. What kind of discussions are going on inside? Why won’t they come out here? We demand the Vice Chancellor’s resignation; she is accountable. A young woman, a mother’s daughter who was due to be married next year, has lost her life. Tell me, will she ever come back? We want the VC’s resignation today. If students across the country could force the Education Minister to resign over paper leaks, who is this VC to think she is untouchable? We want her resignation today." #WATCH | Chandigarh: Students at Panjab University stage a protest following the death of a PhD scholar, who was allegedly electrocuted on a waterlogged road on the campus during heavy rain. pic.twitter.com/utsuTk8Wfg— ANI (@ANI) July 28, 2026 Probe Panel Formed Panjab University Vice Chancellor Renu Vig said that the administration will look into the death and a committee has been set up. “For accountability, let us check first.
