An official general diary entry recorded at the Parliament Street police station has revealed that the Rapid Action Force used anti-riot guns firing non-lethal plastic pellets during the July 20 protest crackdown at Delhi's Jantar Mantar against the NEET paper leak. The document confirms that RAF personnel fired two rounds of anti-riot plastic pellet cartridges, along with tear smoke grenades and electrical shells, on the directions of a Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The revelation contradicts earlier denials by the Delhi Police, which had described reports of pellet gun usage as false. Meanwhile, police defended their actions by claiming facial recognition analysis identified 2,873 individuals with criminal antecedents at the protest site, including those accused of serious offenses like murder, rape, and robbery. In response to petitions by former IPS officer Yashvardhan Jha Azad and affected protesters, the Supreme Court ordered no coercive action against civilian protesters, clarifying that immunity does not extend to persons with criminal records.
