A fresh water dispute has erupted between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the sharing of Kaveri River water and the proposed Mekedatu dam project. Tamil Nadu claims that Karnataka has failed to release its allocated share of water for June and July due to severe rain deficits in the Kaveri delta region. In response, Karnataka contends that low reservoir levels in Kabini and KRS permit water usage only for drinking purposes, prioritizing drinking water as mandated by the Supreme Court.
The dispute intensified after Karnataka renewed its push to construct the Mekedatu balancing reservoir, claiming it would store excess water during surplus periods for future use. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the central government to withhold approval for the project to protect Tamil Nadu’s water rights. Meanwhile, the Kaveri Water Regulation Committee directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily for fifteen days.
