India has approved its first dengue vaccine, Qdenga, developed by Japan's Takeda, marking a major milestone in the country's fight against dengue. The vaccine is designed to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes and is approved for children aged 4 to 16 years. Administered in two doses, three months apart, Qdenga does not require prior dengue infection or blood testing before vaccination.
Clinical trials involving more than 28,000 participants reported 80.2% efficacy against confirmed dengue and 90.4% protection against dengue-related hospitalizations. While rollout timelines will depend on manufacturing and distribution, the approval is expected to strengthen India's public health response alongside mosquito control measures.
