(News18) Soon after the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a detailed meeting with Members of Parliament from Assam to review the flood situation in the state and discuss relief and rehabilitation measures. The meeting, held in the prime minister’s chamber in Parliament, was attended by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Assam, including Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union minister of state Pabitra Margherita, Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia, and other legislators.

During the meeting, the MPs briefed the prime minister on the extensive damage caused by the floods and the relief work being undertaken by the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government. Saikia presented a detailed assessment of the situation on the ground. According to the presentation made before the prime minister, floods between April 29 and July 25 have affected 25 districts and 77 revenue circles across Assam. As many as 2,145 villages have been impacted, affecting 11,41,640 people. The state has operationalised 210 relief camps, sheltering 68,258 people, while 1,610 relief distribution centres have been set up. The flood-related death toll has risen to 68, with eight people still missing. The floods have also damaged 425 houses completely and 3,550 houses partially, while 29,923 people have been evacuated to safer locations these being preliminary figures. Sources said the prime minister patiently heard the concerns raised by the MPs and shared his own experience of handling natural disasters during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat.

Drawing from Gujarat’s disaster management model, PM Modi emphasised the importance of swift relief and standard operating procedures during emergencies. The prime minister is learnt to have suggested that the Assam government consider distributing comprehensive relief kits to affected families, similar to those used in Gujarat during natural disasters. The kits, sources said, would include essential food items, basic clothing, medicines, utensils and other household necessities to help families immediately after displacement. The MPs informed the prime minister that they would launch a relief initiative from Guwahati on Wednesday to distribute essential supplies worth Rs 12 crore among flood-affected families. PM Modi assured the MPs of the Centre’s full support in tackling the crisis and appreciated the efforts of the Assam government in managing the flood situation. While a central team is already in Assam assessing the damage, the prime minister also indicated that a senior Union minister would be deputed to the state to further strengthen coordination and relief efforts.
