The Supreme Court of India, while hearing petitions regarding violence during student protests over paper leaks, observed that the allegations prima facie make out a case for a high-powered probe. The top court specified that any probe must examine both alleged police excesses against protesters and attacks on police personnel across multiple states, including Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra.
Before issuing final orders on the high-powered probe, the Supreme Court granted time to the Union government, the Delhi government, and state governments to file affidavits detailing their stance. As interim measures, the top court directed authorities to preserve all digital evidence, including CCTV, drone, body camera, and wireless footage, while ensuring personal data collected during the demonstrations is not released into the public domain.
Additionally, the court ordered that no coercive action be taken regarding FIRs filed against protesters and directed the release of all detained or arrested individuals who do not have prior criminal antecedents.
