The department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, has summoned representatives of Meta, Google, X, Snapchat and other leading digital platforms for a meeting on August 3 to discuss the regulation of social and digital media platforms. According to sources, members of the committee are expected to raise a range of questions surrounding content moderation and platform accountability, including why there was a temporary glitch in the Prime Minister’s Facebook video, why violent content is not always removed proactively, and why abusive videos often remain online unless law enforcement agencies specifically seek their takedown. Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have also been asked to appear before the panel.

The official agenda for the meeting states that the committee will receive briefings from MeitY, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and representatives of social media platforms, including Snapchat, Google, X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook and Instagram), on the subject of “social and digital platforms and their regulation". The meeting comes amid growing calls for a stronger regulatory framework governing digital intermediaries in India. Lawmakers are expected to examine the existing legal framework, compliance mechanisms, grievance redressal systems and the accountability of social media platforms for content hosted on their services. The discussion follows recent scrutiny of Meta after a technical glitch briefly affected a Facebook post featuring PM Modi, prompting the company to apologise and restore the content. The episode has renewed questions over the reliability of content moderation systems and the transparency of decisions taken by digital platforms.
