(AFP) US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that Israel had turned back troops that were reportedly headed towards Beirut following a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had a “very productive call" with Netanyahu and stated that there would be no Israeli troops going to Beirut, adding that any troops already en route had been ordered to return. “There will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back," he wrote.
The US president further said he had communicated with Hezbollah through intermediaries and claimed both sides had agreed to stop firing, adding that Israel would not attack the group and Hezbollah would not target Israel. “Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel," he added. Iran Suspends Indirect US Talks Trump’s latest comments come shortly after Iranian state media reported that Tehran had suspended all indirect talks with the United States to end the war, citing Israel’s escalating military operations in Lebanon. Iran’s Tasnim news agency said Tehran had halted dialogue and the exchange of messages through mediators, arguing that Israel’s expanding offensive in Lebanon had violated conditions linked to ongoing ceasefire efforts.
Tasnim also reported that Iran and its allies were considering wider regional measures, including steps to fully restrict the Strait of Hormuz and activate other strategic fronts such as the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key maritime chokepoint near the Red Sea. Separately, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were quoted as warning of opening “new fronts" following a series of overnight exchanges of fire involving Washington and Tehran. The latest exchange of strikes coincided with Israel expanding its ground offensive in Lebanon, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to push deeper into the country and directing the military to strike “terror targets" in a southern Beirut district. Israel said the move followed alleged “repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by Hezbollah and the attacks against our cities and citizens."
