With this, Anthropic will surpass ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March. (Image: Reuters) Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, said on Monday that it has confidentially filed paperwork for an initial public offering (IPO), joining a growing list of Silicon Valley AI firms seeking fresh capital to fund the industry’s rapid growth. “This gives us the option to go public after the Securities and Exchange Commission completes its review," the company said in a statement.

“The proposed initial public offering will depend on market conditions and other factors." This confirms Anthropic’s place as one of the significant players in AI. A confidential IPO filing allows a company to submit its registration documents to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for review without immediately disclosing its financial performance and business details to the public. Those details are typically revealed closer to the public listing. According to AFP, the filing came just days after the company said it raised $65 billion in a new funding round that valued the Claude maker at $965 billion, putting it on the cusp of a trillion-dollar valuation. With this, Anthropic will surpass ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March.

The IPOs would likely follow Elon Musk’s SpaceX to Wall Street. SpaceX, which absorbed his AI company, xAI, in February, could see shares begin trading as early as June 12, targeting a valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion in what would be the largest IPO in history, AFP reported. The IPO filing comes as Anthropic deals with a high-profile legal dispute with the Pentagon, having previously sued the Defense Department after the agency designated the company a supply chain risk. According to CNN, the Pentagon and Anthropic are at odds over restrictions the company places on the use of Claude, the first AI system to be used in the military’s classified network. Dario Amodei, Anthropic CEO, said the artificial intelligence company “cannot in good conscience accede" to the Pentagon’s demands to allow unrestricted use of its technology.
