There is a state of emergency in Ecuador - the latest in a series - as the country battles local drug gangs with links to international cartels. Once one of South America’s most peaceful corners, Ecuador now has a murder rate that is one of the highest in the world.
The country has become the gateway for about 70% of the cocaine reaching the US and Europe – including the UK. The drug floods in from neighbouring Colombia and Peru, the two biggest cocaine producers in the world.
