(Photo: PTI) Heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR on Tuesday as dark skies blanketed the region, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing humid weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several parts of the city, warning that more rain accompanied by gusty winds is likely over the next few hours. According to the IMD, Safdarjung, Delhi’s base weather station, recorded 32.4 mm of rainfall till 8:30 am. Other stations also received significant rainfall, with Ridge recording 37.6 mm, Lodhi Road 36.7 mm, Ayanagar 4 mm, and Palam 0.8 mm.

MORE RAIN LIKELY THROUGH THE DAY The weather department has forecast a generally cloudy sky, with one or two spells of very light to light rain at most places and moderate rainfall at a few locations from morning till noon. Another spell of rain is likely towards the evening or night, according to the IMD. The department has also predicted moderate rainfall on Wednesday, with light to moderate showers expected across several parts of Delhi. The current weather pattern is expected to continue over the next few days, with the city likely to witness light rain, thunderstorms and cloudy skies.

TEMPERATURE TO FALL, AQI REMAINS SATISFACTORY Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 25.5 degrees Celsius, which was 1.8 degrees below normal. On Monday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung had touched 38.1 degrees Celsius, but the IMD expects daytime temperatures to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next six days due to increased rainfall activity. Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality also remained favourable. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 77 at 9 am, placing it in the ‘satisfactory’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The ongoing spell of rain is linked to a deep depression near the West Bengal coast, which crossed the West Bengal-North Odisha coast near Digha and west of Haldia on Tuesday morning. The weather system is expected to influence rainfall over several parts of northern and eastern India. The IMD has advised commuters to check traffic conditions before travelling and avoid waterlogged stretches during periods of intense rainfall.
