A lifetime of companionship ended in a shared final journey for an elderly couple in Andhra Pradesh, where the wife died hours after her husband and the two were cremated together. 87-year-old Kaneti Tatarao, a retired employee from a village in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district, passed away due to age-related ailments on July 24. As family members were preparing for his funeral on Sunday, his wife, 76-year-old Jhansi Lakshmi, also died.

The couple's deaths left their family and relatives grief-stricken. In a poignant final farewell, their mortal remains were taken together in a single funeral procession before being cremated in the presence of relatives, friends and villagers. The incident comes days after a similar tragedy was reported from Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district, where a man died of a heart attack while preparing to perform the last rites of his wife.
According to locals, 35-year-old Pinki had been battling tuberculosis (TB) for the past four years and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kanpur. She died on Monday evening after her condition worsened. The following morning, as family members prepared for her cremation, her husband, 40-year-old Shyaml Das, collapsed while performing the customary ritual of applying vermilion (sindoor) to his wife's forehead before the funeral. Residents said Shyaml had remained inconsolable throughout the night after his wife's death and is believed to have suffered a fatal heart attack due to the shock.
His sudden death deepened the family's tragedy, with the couple's funeral processions taking place on the same day. Ends
