Why Is Johnson & Johnson Facing Lawsuits? The lawsuits date back to 2009 and are centred around claims that J&J’s talc products were contaminated with asbestos, a substance linked to cancer. Talc is a naturally occurring mineral widely used in cosmetic products because of its soft texture. However, because talc deposits can occur near asbestos deposits, plaintiffs have argued that some products may have contained traces of the cancer-causing substance. J&J has repeatedly rejected these claims, saying its talc products are safe, asbestos-free and do not cause cancer.
What Does The Settlement Include? Under the proposed deal, J&J would pay up to $3 billion next year, with no additional payments expected before 2028. The settlement still requires approval from law firms representing 95% of ovarian cancer claims filed against the company in state and federal courts. Is Johnson & Johnson’s Talc Baby Powder Available? No. J&J stopped selling its talc-based baby powder in the US in 2020 and ended worldwide sales in 2022. The company said it shifted to an alternative cornstarch-based formula as part of a broader product review. Has Johnson & Johnson Admitted Wrongdoing?
